Steve Kovacs is a long-standing engineer/mixer with more than ten years experience at Pressure Point. The Record-Row studio hired Steve based on his blend of tech and music-lingo. He credits this backbone to graduating from The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences, along with his music theory training via Berklee College of Music. When he was fresh to the studio life, Steve mentored with the late Larry Sturm. As an apprentice, Steve was influenced by Sturm’s style, eventually creating his own.
Steve’s engineering style is versatile, lending his ears to a range of genres as diverse as Chicago. He embodied the studio’s reputation for urban music, achieving gold record status after working on Jennifer Hudson’s debut. He recorded with rocker David Draiman during hiatus with Disturbed, witnessing the birth of the side-project Device. When Kurt Carr brought back the Thompson Community Singers for a Shirley Caesar single, Steve was there to capture the forty-person ensemble.
As a mixer, Steve was featured in Mix Magazine’s Mix Tips spread. The article featured some of Steve’s techniques, including his use of analog and digital as a hybrid, where to place instruments in the stereo field, and coloring the sound of a lead vocal. When mixing, Steve feeds-off a song’s character and vibe; adding an aggressive effect to Juicy J’s ad libs found on Young Chop’s Precious album. More recently, techno pioneer Jeff Mills, hired Steve to enhance his Free Fall Galaxy release producing an atmospheric mood.
“A song is like a person. It has character & a story. The job of a mixer is to bring-out the emotion of the lyrics, whether it be pain or happiness. The mix should reflect that feeling.”
